Germany vs UK: Two Different Testing Philosophies
Germany and the UK run the two largest accreditation systems in Europe, but they operate quite differently. We compared DAkkS and UKAS side by side: lab counts, category coverage, unique capabilities. Here is how each system serves its market.

What the data shows
Germany's DAkkS system and the UK's UKAS represent two fundamentally different approaches to accredited testing. DAkkS operates 3,069 laboratories across 87 testing categories: a broad, manufacturing-driven network shaped by Germany's industrial base. UKAS accredits 2,455 labs across 83 categories, reflecting the UK's services-oriented economy and its historic strength in calibration, inspection, and life sciences.
The category-level data reveals where each system invests its depth. Where DAkkS leads in capability count, it typically reflects Germany's strength in materials testing, mechanical engineering, and chemical analysis - sectors where the country's manufacturing output demands dense local coverage. Where UKAS leads, it often signals specialisms in environmental monitoring, food safety, or clinical diagnostics that align with UK regulatory priorities.
For procurement teams, this comparison is practical. If you need accredited testing in a category where one system leads by a wide margin, the other country may have limited options, or none at all. The exclusive categories listed above are the sharpest example: capabilities that exist in one national system but not the other, meaning cross-border sourcing is the only route.
Methodology
This report compares two national accreditation bodies - DAkkS (Germany) and UKAS (United Kingdom) - using live data from the ScopeMatch database. "Capabilities" refers to canonical test methods after normalisation across national-language scope documents. "Labs" is the count of distinct accredited organisations holding at least one capability in that category.
A body "leads" in a category when it holds more canonical capabilities than the other. Categories exclusive to one body have zero capabilities recorded for the other in the ScopeMatch database. This may reflect genuine absence or differences in how each body classifies its scope annexes.
All figures reflect the ScopeMatch database as of April 2026.
