The Medical Lab Supply Chain: Where Europe Tests Biocompatibility, Diagnostics, and Sterility
Medical device and pharmaceutical companies depend on a specialised network of accredited laboratories for biocompatibility, clinical chemistry, molecular diagnostics, and sterility testing. We mapped this network across six European countries to show where capacity is concentrated.

Concentration risk in medical testing
Medical device manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies outsource a significant volume of accredited testing: biocompatibility, sterility assurance, clinical chemistry, molecular diagnostics. The assumption is that capacity is abundant. The data tells a different story. Across six European countries, medical testing capability is concentrated in a small number of laboratories, and several sub-disciplines are served by fewer than a handful of accredited providers per country.
That concentration matters most when it intersects with regulatory timelines. An MDR or IVDR submission that depends on a sterility test from one of three accredited labs in your country is a submission that lives or dies by that lab's backlog. Procurement teams that treat lab selection as a commodity decision, picking whichever provider returns a quote fastest, are underestimating the structural fragility of the supply chain they depend on.
The practical implication: qualify backup laboratories before you need them. The table above shows where capacity exists by country. For any category where a single country holds the majority of labs, cross-border sourcing is not a contingency plan; it is the default operating mode for most of Europe.
Methodology
This report identifies testing categories in the ScopeMatch database that relate to medical, pharmaceutical, diagnostic, and biocompatibility testing. For each category, we count the number of distinct accredited laboratories and canonical capabilities across all six national accreditation bodies: DAkkS (Germany), UKAS (United Kingdom), COFRAC (France), RvA (Netherlands), ACCREDIA (Italy), and ENAC (Spain).
Country breakdown figures reflect the accreditation body that issued each laboratory's accreditation, not necessarily the physical location of testing. A laboratory is counted once per category regardless of how many individual capabilities it holds within that category.
All figures reflect the ScopeMatch database as of April 2026.
