Clusters and deserts

The data tells a clear story: testing capacity in Europe is heavily concentrated in a small number of countries. Germany and the United Kingdom together account for the majority of accredited laboratories in our database: a direct reflection of the size and maturity of their national accreditation systems, DAkkS and UKAS respectively.

France, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain round out the top tier, but with significantly fewer labs per capita in most test categories. For procurement teams based in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, or smaller Western European markets, this concentration creates a practical challenge: fewer local options means longer lead times, higher shipping costs for samples, and more complex logistics.

The category heatmap above reveals a second pattern. Some test categories - particularly mechanical testing and chemical analysis - are well-served across all six countries. Others, like calibration and NDT, show sharp drop-offs outside Germany and the UK. If you need a niche test performed, geography matters more than you might expect.

The implication for quality managers is straightforward. When sourcing a testing partner, check where capacity actually exists for your specific test method, not just which countries have labs in general. A "European directory" means little if 80% of the relevant labs are in two countries.

Methodology

This report counts the number of distinct accredited laboratories per country and per test category across all six national accreditation bodies in the ScopeMatch database: DAkkS (Germany), UKAS (United Kingdom), COFRAC (France), RvA (Netherlands), ACCREDIA (Italy), and ENAC (Spain).

Country assignment reflects the accreditation body that issued the laboratory's accreditation, not necessarily the physical location of the laboratory. A laboratory accredited by UKAS but physically located in Ireland would be counted under GB (UKAS), not IE.

Category counts reflect the number of labs holding at least one canonical capability mapped to that category. A lab with capabilities in both MECHANICAL and CHEMICAL is counted once in each.

All figures reflect the ScopeMatch database as of May 2026.
