UIC 651

Railway Driver Cab Design and Layout

This standard specifies ergonomic and functional requirements for the layout and design of driver cabs in locomotives, railcars, and driving trailers to ensure operator safety, efficiency, and comfort during long operational shifts. It covers positioning of controls, displays, seats, visibility requirements, access, and environmental conditions within the cab environment. Compliance is essential for vehicle manufacturers, railway operators, and occupational health specialists to reduce driver fatigue, prevent errors, and meet modern safety and human factors standards. Accredited evaluation ensures systematic verification that cab designs meet ergonomic criteria and regulatory requirements for safe, sustainable railway operations.

What it measures

  • Control positioning and reach distances from driver seat
  • Visibility zones and sight lines to track ahead and sides
  • Display and instrument panel layout and readability
  • Driver seat dimensions, adjustment, and comfort properties
  • Access doorway dimensions, handholds, and ingress/egress safety
