Rail and Wheel Surface Roughness Measurement
This test measures micro and macro-scale surface roughness on railway wheels and rails to assess their contribution to rolling noise generation. Surface irregularities on the wheel-rail interface are primary sources of railway noise, making this measurement essential for noise control and environmental compliance. The test uses standardized contact filtering and measurement zones to quantify roughness parameters that correlate with noise emissions. Railway infrastructure managers, wheel manufacturers, and rolling stock operators use this test to monitor equipment maintenance and optimize noise reduction strategies. Accredited testing provides validated data for environmental impact assessments and compliance with EU noise directives.
What it measures
- Macroscopic roughness (wavelength 3–300 mm)
- Microscopic roughness (wavelength 0.1–3 mm)
- Peak-to-valley surface irregularities
- Root mean square roughness values (Ra, Rz, Rq)
- Wavelength-specific roughness spectra
