ISO 9227

Salt Spray Corrosion Testing

Salt spray testing subjects coated or treated metallic specimens to a controlled saline fog environment to assess corrosion resistance and coating adhesion. ISO 9227 defines three variants: neutral salt spray (NSS), acetic acid salt spray (AASS), and copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray (CASS). Results guide coating selection for automotive, marine, and outdoor applications.

What it measures

  • Time to first visible corrosion (hours)
  • Coating adhesion after salt-fog exposure
  • Creep corrosion from a scribe line
  • Overall corrosion rating per ISO 10289 / ISO 4628
