ISO 148-1

Charpy Impact Testing

Charpy impact testing measures the energy absorbed by a standardised notched specimen when struck by a swinging pendulum. It characterises a material’s toughness and brittle-to-ductile transition temperature. ISO 148-1 is mandatory for structural steels, pressure vessels, and pipelines operating at low temperatures or in impact-prone environments.

What it measures

  • Absorbed impact energy (KV2, KU2) in joules
  • Lateral expansion
  • Fracture appearance (percentage shear area)
  • Ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT)
