EN ISO 17640

Ultrasonic Non-Destructive Testing

Ultrasonic testing (UT) detects internal flaws, wall thickness, and material discontinuities in metallic and composite components without damaging them. EN ISO 17640 covers manual UT of fusion-welded joints; phased-array (PAUT) and time-of-flight diffraction (TOFD) extend the technique to automated flaw sizing. UT is essential for pressure equipment, pipelines, and structural welds.

What it measures

  • Internal flaw detection (cracks, inclusions, porosity)
  • Flaw location, size, and orientation
  • Wall thickness measurement
  • Bond integrity in bonded structures
  • Weld root and fusion defects
